The Big Squenix Hoping to Boost Sales With Partner in U.S.
Square-Enix is one of the industry giants in Japan. Their games drive console sales, as evidenced with the Super Nintendo, PlayStation, and PlayStation 2. Now with a new era, the home of Final Fantasy is looking for a U.S. publisher to partner up with to boost U.S. sales.
Michihiro Sasaki, senior vice-president of Square-Enix Japan, told Financial Times that, "it was imperative that the games maker increase its share of the US gaming market." He mentioned that Nintendo did a great job of opening the gaming market to a more casual market of "women, children, and older people", and that he was a bit worried about the less than stellar sales of the PS3, particularly since they have so much vested in the PS3 exclusives Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. He also mentioned that the American audience seemed more attuned to action games than the Square-Enix staple RPG.
Square-Enix only got 10-20 percent of its revenue from overseas. Sasaki aspires to make it half within three years. This marks a second time the big Square-Enix would be trying to make a deal with a U.S. publisher, the first being Electronic Arts back in 1998.
