Not that anyone can't find the thing now...
SCEA CEO Jack Tretton is quoted in Reuters, stating, "April or May is when we feel like we're going to catch up to demand and have product fully in stock across North America and stay there".
For those of us keeping track, it's quite possible to find a PS3 just about anywhere, save for a few key locations. A parody of another communique of Tretton's is found with this Penny Arcade strip, which has its basis in an interview in a January issue of EGM (a portion of this article can be found here). Personally, I've found about four or five of the things within the surrounding areas here. If this were just the 20 gig units, it would be one thing, but these were all the premium, 60 gig PS3s.
He claims that the PS3 stock sitting on shelves is a testament to how quickly the PS3 is selling and Sony is restocking, instead of a lack of interest for the system. Meanwhile, Nintendo's Wii is selling like hotcakes, making it almost impossible to find anywhere for the past four months. January revealed that in a five week span, Nintendo sold 436,000 Wiis, Microsoft sold 294,000 XBox 360s, and Sony sold 244,000 PS3s (according to NPD), putting the Wii to PS3 ratio at 1.79-to-1, and the 360 to PS3 ratio at 1.2-to-1.
