Games for the people by the people

All you game developers look out, Microsoft is opening the floodgates.

People who have wanted to make a video game but didn't think it was possible are being catered to with Microsoft’s new service. First released in Beta in August last year, the XNA Game Studio Express is up and running and to get things really moving Microsoft has decided to have a contest for creating games. While much remains a mystery, the contest begins this week so all will be unveiled shortly. Check out the details here.

This could be a really great thing for gaming in general. I believe it will help infuse some creativity back into the world of gaming and give people a voice that they never had access to before. Game production has fast become an expensive endeavor making it hard for independent game developers to compete with the high production values of games today. But with contests and opportunities like this Microsoft is really going to help out the little guys and probably get some games with some pretty great ideas out there for everyone to play in the process.
