Has America always been this fucking depressing?
Where to begin?
First, Seymour Hersh, the man who helped bring Abu Ghraib to the headlines, has written that the United States had considered plans to provide aid to political parties in Iraq prior to the Iraqi election in February. "Fair and free" elections, eh? And although the White House says it backed off such plans, there is still evidence that aid was provided through covert means and using money "off the books." Does this have anything to do with that $9 billion we can't seem to find over there?
But then again, how are we supposed to keep track of billions of dollars in Iraq when we have billions being stolen right from under our noses? Medicaid scammers have potentially fleeced billions of dollars from the New York Medicaid system. This New York Times story documents how one dental practice claimed to perform 991 procedures in a single day out of a Brooklyn storefront. If you won't buy their bridge, perhaps there's some fillings you'd be interested in?
But of course the FBI is much too busy to look into things like that because they're filling up their files with documentation on groups that have never harmed anyone. A recent ACLU Freedom of Information request found that the FBI has amassed at least 3,500 pages on the ACLU, Greenpeace, and other non-violent action groups critical of the Bush administration. The FBI is now stalling the release of these records, claiming it will take 9 months to prepare them.
Lying to protect a corrupt official, perpetuating a civil war overseas, using the FBI to monitor and suppress dissent... where's that bastard Nixon when you need him?
