The initial reports from George Weller, the first American reporter to tour the devastation in Nagasaki after U.S. forces dropped atomic bomb, "Fat Man," over the city, have been uncovered and published in Japan.
Weller's reports were censored and never returned by General MacArthur's office and were believed lost. Weller's son believes that the reports were censored by General MacArthur so that the military, not scientists, would receive credit for defeating Japan. Others suggest that the reports were censored to keep questions from being raised about the moral implications of using and manufacturing nuclear weapons on a larger scale.
The reports initially praise the effectiveness of the atomic bomb, then reveal the suffering of those caught in the bomb's aftereffects and the inability of doctors to treat the dying.
